Diploma and Certificate Programs as University Pathways
Australia offers VET (Vocational Education and Training) programs which are designed to prepare students for employment and enhance skills of people who are already in the Australian workforce. VET programs was more recently referred to as Technical and Further Education (TAFE) programs, but the term VET is used in today’s Australian Education System. However, the government VET institutions are still called “TAFE” institutions and private VET programs providers is generally called “Colleges”. At VET institutions the academic year runs from February to late November. Most institutions have 2 semesters (4 terms) with breaks in between each.
Class term dates vary slightly from year to year;
Semester 1: Term 1: early February-end March
Term 2: mid April-end June
Semester 2: Term 3: mid July-mid September
Term 4: early October-mid December
Vocational courses persuade you to be an active learner and independent, both in the classroom and in work environments. Many VET institutions offer wide range of courses at the Advanced Diploma, Diploma and Certificate level and courses includes information technology, business and management, marketing and communications, health, science, design and the arts, television production and media, environmental studies and land management, sport and recreation, engineering and building, and hospitality and tourism. English language training and university preparation courses are also offered.
Majority of VET graduates use their qualifications to gain advanced standing in a degree programs through arrangements for advance standing in Universities. Therefore number of International students prefer in studying at TAFE (VET) Institutions or private colleges as a first step of their University studies. The other advantage of VET institutions is their qualifications are recognized nationally. In other words International students, who are considering being part of Australian workforce after a proper full time visa guaranteed by the Department of Immigration and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA), may prefer obtain a TAFE qualification to have an advantage for the employment in Australia.
